Jeff Gordon captured his 70th career pole Saturday morning, breaking the tie with Cale Yarborough and taking over sole position of third on the all-time pole’s winner list. Richard Petty with 123 poles and David Pearson with 113 are the only two drivers ahead of Jeff Gordon.

Gordon will be surrounded by Hendrick teammates coming to the green on Sunday. Jimmie Johnson qualified second, Mark Martin in third and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in fourth.

This is only the third time one team has swept all four of the top positions– Roush Fenway Racing did it at Fontana in 2005 and Pete DePaolo did it at Charlotte in 1956.

Although where you qualify at Talladega doesn’t have much of an impact on your finish, the track position Hendrick will begin with will certainly help avoid any early trouble. The two car tandem will allow Jeff Gordon to work with shop partner, Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson with his shop partner, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Michael McDowell, Tony Raines and Mike Skinner failed to make Sunday’s race.
