Carl Edwards won Saturday night’s Great Clips 300 at Atlanta, overcoming a pit road penalty and keeping Kyle Busch at bay in the final laps to earn his sixth Nationwide victory of the 2011 season and 35th of his career.

“The car was spectacular from the first lap on the race track the car was great,” said Edwards. “Mike and Scott and all the guys did a really great job with it. It’s amazing how these cars have progressed over the last year to year-and-a-half. They’re really fast.

“It was just a fun race. I love this race track. Whatever it is about this race track that makes it so much fun to drive we need to figure out if we can engineer that into some other race tracks. This is as good as it gets, so I’m excited for tomorrow. I’m really excited to go run 500 miles here.”

Edwards regained the lead on lap 177 of 195 and immediately set his Ford on cruise control, stretching his lead over teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Busch. Busch, who led a total of 31 laps Saturday, passed Stenhouse Jr. for second with nine to go but was unable to catch Edwards, trailing at the line by 0.697 seconds.

Stenhouse Jr. held on to finish third, stretching his points lead over Elliott Sadler to 13. Kevin Harvick finished in fourth followed by Kasey Kahne, Justin Allgaier, Brad Keselowski, Aric Almirola, Jason Leffler and Sadler.

Championship contender Reed Sorenson took a huge hit to his title hopes Saturday when he was turned by his Turner Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier. Sorenson was clipped by Allgaier, sending him directly into the outside wall and ending his day. Sorenson finished 32nd and now sits 40 points out of first.

“It’s kind of uncalled for to wreck your teammate, especially when we’re running for the championship,” said Sorenson following the wreck. “I will find him after the race and it will be between me and him.”

Allgaier immediately apologized after the race.

“I’ve got to apologize to Reed (Sorenson). I just hate it for those guys. I know they’re running for the championship. We definitely didn’t help him tonight. … There’s no words that can describe how disappointing it is.”
