Front Row Motorsports, despite the name, has never started a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from the front row.

In their history, they have one career win which came last year at Talladega Superspeedway with David Ragan.

The super speedways of NASCAR are the great equalizer. The rule of thumb is that if you bring an OK car with a decent engine, you have a chance to win.

With NASCAR’s new knockout qualifying format being utilized at the super speedways, everything about the Daytona and Talladega weekends are wide-open.

That allowed for David Gilliland and his No.38 team to “go for broke” in qualifying Friday afternoon at Daytona.

While most teams played head games and wanted to find the perfect time to turn a fast lap, Gilliland and a train of “underdogs” took to the track and swept the top-four qualifying positions.

By winning the pole, Gilliland secured the first pole award for Front Row Motorsports and the third of his career. Gilliland’s most recent pole was the 2007 Daytona 500.

Reed Sorenson, Landon Cassill, Bobby Labonte, and Jimmie Johnson round out the top-five starters for Saturday night’s race.

Joe Nemechek, making an attempt for RAB Racing, failed to qualify.
