BROOKLYN,MI— For the second consecutive week, Jeff Gordon will start from the pole as he took the top-spot in qualifying for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Gordon’s lap averaging the two-mile, d-shaped oval at 206.558 mph broke the track record set by Kevin Harvick when the Sprint Cup Series last visited the track in June. The lap turned by Gordon is the seventh-fastest pole in NASCAR history.

“The car is just phenomenal,” Gordon said after qualifying. “I was a little unsure of what we were going to have going qualifying, but the car was phenomenal.”

The No.24 Chevrolet of Gordon ousted defending Pure Michigan 400 winner Joey Logano in the final moments of qualifying on Friday.

“We just had to make a slight adjustment on a couple things, and again, the car was phenomenal.”

Logano and Carl Edwards were the only drivers other than Gordon to eclipse the 206 mph mark during the session.

Gordon, Logano, Edwards, Brian Vickers, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Paul Menard, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. round out the top-ten starters for Sunday’s race.

Jeff Burton, who is subsituting for Tony Stewart, qualified the No.14 Chevrolet in the twenty-seventh position.

Of the forty-three cars that made qualifying run, thirty-two of them turned a lap over 200 mph.
