Johnny Sauter earned the pole for an unusual Thursday night race at Kentucky Speedway after turning a lap of 174.109 mph (31.015 seconds) around the 1.5 mile D-shaped oval. Sauter was the last driver to qualify in Thursday’s session, and was able to knock last year’s pole winner Austin Dillon (173.410 mph) off of the provisional pole.

“We’ve had a lot of speed since we unloaded,” Sauter said. “The way we ran here last year I thought that we could come here with pretty much the same setup and just tweak on it. And that’s what we did. It was good enough for the pole.”

Nelson Piquet Jr. qualified third with Nationwide regular Elliott Sadler in fourth and Parker Kligerman in fifth. Joey Coulter, Ron Hornaday Jr., Kyle Busch, Jason White and Cole Whitt round out the top 10.

Clay Greenfield in the #68 Dodge was the only driver which failed to qualify.
