Pocono Raceway: Kurt Busch Captures Second Straight Pole; Third Straight for Penske Racing

June 11, 2011 No Comments

Kurt Busch was able to capture his second straight pole on Saturday despite having to go to a backup car after a wreck in final practice. Busch lost control and slammed the outside wall, forcing his team to make a quick switch before Saturday’s qualifying.

Busch’s late qualifying run in the new qualifying format benefited him greatly, as he turned a lap of 52.454 seconds at 171.579 mph. The pole is the third consecutive for Penske Racing and comes just one week after Brad Keselowski won the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway.

“An honest thank you to my guys, especially the ones back at the shop preparing the cars,” said Busch. “To pull a backup out that’s a pole-winning car, that’s something you really wouldn’t hear about back in the day.”

Paul Menard continues his quest for his first career Sprint Cup victory, and will do so from the front row. A pair of four-time Pocono winners will fill the second row, with Jeff Gordon in third and Denny Hamlin in fourth. Regan Smith rounds out the top five.

Mike Skinner failed to qualify for Sunday’s race due to a wreck in qualifying.
