Kyle Busch Wins Truck Race at Charlotte, Kimi Raikkonen With a Strong Finish in NASCAR Debut

May 20, 2011 1 Comment

The debut of F-1 champion, Kimi Raikkonen, was overshadowed by car owner and teammate Kyle Busch. Raikkonen found himself dipping in and out of the top 10 in Friday’s truck race, but the late surge by Busch was the reason for celebration at Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM).

Busch only led seven of the 134 laps on Friday, earning him his 28th career truck series win and the 97th career win in NASCAR’s top three series, tying him with Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Darrell Waltrip.

Busch thanked a very special person for guiding him to victory lane.

“I had an angel riding with me there on that last run of the race with Zahra Baker. (A 10-year-old disabled North Carolina girl who was found murdered last year.) We didn’t have the truck to beat tonight — the 2 (Clint Bowyer) did. Somehow I found some more out of it and I’m going to say that I had some help tonight.”

“It’s weird how things work, but, man, when you believe in it and you trust it and you have faith in it, it’ll repay you,” Busch said.

Raikkonen, the 2007 F-1 champion, scored a 15th place finish in his NASCAR debut after starting in 31st position.

“There is still a lot to learn and improve, but I think when we have another race it will be better,” said Raikkonen.

Raikkonen’s career in NASCAR doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The vacated Nationwide car sitting at Kyle Busch Motorsport’s could be on the track next weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with no other than Raikkonen driving.

Clint Bowyer couldn’t hold off Busch and had to settle for a second place finish. Cole Whitt finished in third, backing up his second place finish at Dover last weekend. Whitt now finds himself sitting on top of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) points standings for the first time in his career. Whitt is the first rookie ever rookie to lead the points and is the youngest to do so.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be back in action June 4th, 2011 at Kansas Speedway.

Great article. Congrats to Kyle Busch. He definitley seems like a different person. He has always been an outstanding driver, but his behavior both off and on the track has been an obstacle to his overall success. The cockiness and detrimental behavior has traded places with a different sense of self-confidence, inner peace, and a maturity that will help him become the champion he is capable of becoming.
