The current 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader is still being consumed with negotiation talks, something that has both him and the Roush Fenway organization concerned.
Edwards, in his pleasant splendor, seems to “joke” every time a question is asked on whether he will re-sign with the only race team he has ever known while racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
There has been much speculation that if Edwards does not re-sign with the Roush Fenway bunch, then he will join forces with Joe Gibbs Racing. If Joe Gibbs Racing wants to keep three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, the only option to acquire Edwards is if they kick Joey Logano to the curb. Logano was asked about this earlier today, with a smile and a shrug Joey stated, “I don’t know where some of these people come up with these rumors.”
Kyle Busch seems to think that if Edwards does join the Joe Gibbs Racing group, there would be a fourth team.
“If Carl comes over to Gibbs I think it would be beneficial to the company because he’s really good at what he does,” Busch said. “He has great communication. He’s got good feedback. He’s been one of the top three or four guys in the sport every year he’s been around — or at least every year Roush has had good stuff and has run competitively.
“I feel like Carl would certainly mesh well and fit in and we could have better results if we could make it a four-car team. I wouldn’t want to see Joey (Logano) go anywhere. I would hope we could work it where Carl is our fourth guy.”
Several sources have mentioned Logano moving to a fourth car sponsored by NAPA, the current sponsor on the No. 56 Toyota. When asked about NAPA’s future relationship with MWR, a team principal said the contract runs through 2012 and NAPA is committed to that agreement.
So, if anyone knows what is going on behind the scenes it would be Edwards. Several in the garage area already expect Edwards may have already made up his mind and if that’s the case then we should know something very soon.
