Notes

NASCAR’s Nationwide Series will be back in action this weekend after a one week hiatus and with just six races left, drivers will try their luck at the “Monster Mile” in Dover, Delaware. Heading into this final homestretch, Dover and Phoenix sit as the lone one-mile tracks remaining on the 2011 Nationwide schedule, with four 1.5 miles (Kansas, Charlotte, Texas, Homestead) also on tap.

Defending race winner and nine-time winner in 2011, Kyle Busch, will not be defending his title at Dover this weekend. Cup teammate Joey Logano will be piloting Busch’s No. 18 JGR Toyota for the second race in a row, with rookie Ryan Truex in the No. 20 car. Truex, who won the 2009 and 2010 K&N Pro Series East championship with Michael Waltrip Racing, returns to his home track with hopes of wrestling the Rookie of the Year title away from Timmy Hill.

Only 14 points separate points leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and second place Elliott Sadler, with Reed Sorenson 47 points back in third. Among the three Championship contenders, Stenhouse Jr. has the best average finish at the final six tracks with an 11.6 compared Sorenson’s 14.7 and Sadler’s 22.0.

Stenhouse Jr. has to be a clear favorite heading into Saturday’s race, for the simple fact that you can’t look over the progress he has made at Dover. He was 18th in his track debut in the 2010 spring race, finished 11th in this event last year and jumped to fourth in May for an average finish of 11.0.

Think that’s stellar? Well take a look at Sorenson’s stats at the one-mile track. In 10 career starts, Sorenson has yet to reach victory lane but has the best finish of all the top three contenders, that being a second place finish in 2005. Sorenson’s average finish is also the highest of all three at 7.2, with his only hiccup coming in 2007 where a wreck relegated him to a 27th place finish.

Sadler doesn’t fare so well. Sadler finished sixth at Dover in May, his first top-10 at the track since a sixth-place finish in this race in 1997. A terrifying wreck last year while driving the No. 88 for JR Motorsports was the only DNF for Sadler, but that 31st place finish pushed his average finish at Dover back to 15.0.

2010 NNS Champion Brad Keselowski, “Concrete Carl” Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Jamie McMurray and Kasey Kahne will join Logano as the Cup drivers contending for the win on Saturday. Keselowski, Edwards and Bowyer have all captured wins at Dover in the Nationwide Series.
