There’s no place like home, and Ryan Truex proved that Saturday morning.

Making just his 29th career start, Truex was able to drive his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to the top of the speed charts.

Truex’s lap of 23.264 sec/ 154.746 MPH was faster than the rest of the 43 car field, and Joey Logano who is Truex’s teammate this weekend for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Truex’s hometown of Maynetta, NJ is just a few miles from Dover and like his brother, Truex considers Dover his home track.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Truex to ESPN reporters after his lap about sitting on the pole near his hometown. “These guys gave me an awesome car this weekend.”

This is Truex’s first pole, but it isn’t his first start. However for Ty Dillon, who is making his first start, ever will be starting in the top-five. Not only will Dillon be starting in the top-five, he’ll have a better starting position for the green flag than his brother and Richard Childress Racing  teammate, Austin.

Ty will start third and Austin will start in the 11th position when the green flag flies this afternoon.

Just a short time ago, no one knew if Truex was even going to be racing this weekend at his hometown track as he was going  under the knife for an  appendicectomy. Truex healed in time and joked to ESPN reporters that he is now lighter on his right side to help make the car go faster,

When asked who to give the credit for, for the fast lap Truex mentioned his crew.

“It’s these guys,” Truex said about his crew. “I just drive the car, they set it up.”

Rounding out the top-five in qualifying was Ricky Stenhouse Jr.in fourth and Brian Scott in fifth. The fastest Dodge was Sam Hornish Jr. in 10th.
