A week after taking over the top spot in the points, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. once again finds himself on top of the Nationwide Series.

Stenhouse Jr. was fastest in qualifying at Darlington Raceway and grabbed the pole for Friday’s race with a lap of 28.336 seconds/173.546 mph.

This is the first pole of the season for the Roush-Fenway Racing driver, and the best start of his career at the 1.366 mile track. Stenhouse’s best at Darlington was tenth place last year.

It is Stenhouse’s fifth career NASCAR Nationwide Series pole.

The last two years, the winner of the race has started from the pole.

Starting on the outside of  the pole position will be 2010 race winner Denny Hamlin. Hamlin recorded a fast lap of 28.461 sec/172.784 mph.

Hamlin holds the record among active drivers for most wins at Darlington with three wins.

Austin Dillon was the fastest qualifying rookie and had the fastest Chevrolet in the qualifying session, as he qualified third for tonight’s race.

Sam Hornish Jr. had the fastest Dodge in the session, as he qualified eighth.

Coming to Darlington one of the things that drivers have to look out for is the wall, and avoiding the “Darlington stripe” which is when a car hits the wall and causes damage to their car, with this being an impound race, avoiding the Darlington stripe was important for all the drivers since they can not make changes to the car without starting in the back of the field.

Most of the drivers were able to avoid that, but Cole Whitt in the No. 88 Jr. Motorsports Chevrolet got the worst Darlington stripe of them all in the session. Whitt got into the wall and as a result will have to start in the back of the field for going to a back-up car.

No cars will be going home, since only 43 cars were entered for the race.

The field will go green at 7:15 p.m.  EST tonight.
