NSCS: Allmendinger wins second career pole

A.J. Allmendinger last sat on a pole in April of 2010 when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was at Phoenix International Speedway, when he was driving for Richard Petty Motorsports.

Two years later and with a different team, Allmendinger was able to claim another pole.

“We are just trying to build momentum,” Allmendinger said after his lap to Speed reporters. “Hopefully we have a solid 400 miles tomorrow.”

Although this is just his second career pole, and his first career pole at Kansas Speedway, it is his second career top-10 start at the 1.5 mile track located outside Kansas City, Kansas.

Allmendinger’s lap was 30.683 seconds/ 175.993 mph.

For the second straight year, the No.22 Penske Dodge will start on the pole for the STP 400 in Kansas.

The top five qualifiers for Sunday’s race were, Kevin Harvick in second, Joe Gibbs teammates of Joey Logano and Denny hamlin in third and fourth and Mark Martin in fifth.

Of the Fords, Greg Biffle, who is starting in 17th was the fastest.

Failing to qualify for the race on Sunday were Tony Raines, Jeff Green and Tim Andrews.
