For the second time in the 2012 season, Greg Biffle will start a race on the pole as he won the number one starting spot for Saturday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Biffle, a two-time Darlington winner, ousted Jimmie Johnson for the pole with just two cars remaining in the session. He then withstood the challenge from Kevin Harvick to take his second pole at the Darlington Raceway.

His lap of  180.257 mph beat second place Johnson by .105 seconds.

“That was a pretty on-edge lap,” said Biffle to the SPEED crew after his lap won the pole. “I felt like I left a lot on the table through [turn] one and two, but I guess I made it up in three and four.”

The pole marks the 11th of Biffle’s Sprint Cup career. In those 11 number one starts, Biffle has never won a race.

For a moment, it appeared as though a pole would be decided by a tie-breaker.

Both Johnson and Kasey Kahne turned in identical laps during the session, leaving the two Hendrick Motorsports drivers wondering if a tie-breaker for the pole would actually happen.

That talk was quickly extinguished when Biffle put his Roush Fenway Racing Ford on the top-spot.

In her first attempt at the Darlington Raceway, Danica Patrick qualified her No.10 Chevrolet in the 38th starting spot. Patrick will become the third woman to compete at Darlington in Sprint Cup competition since the track opened in 1950.

Kahne, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Regan Smith, and Jeff Burton round out the top-10 starters for the 63rd Bojangles’ Southern 500.

Four drivers failed to make the starting field for Saturday night’s race.

Scott Riggs, Stephen Leicht, Michael McDowell, and Mike Bliss all were forced to go home after not being able to time their way into the field.
