Mark Martin has done it again.

For the third time this season, and the 54th  time in his career, Martin will start from the pole position.

Martin laid down a lap of 22.742 seconds/158.297 mph to edge out former teammate Jimmie Johnson by just five one-thousandth of a second. This is Martin’s fifth career pole at Dover, making him the leader of all active drivers in number of poles at the high banked one mile Delaware track.

“I’m not sure I can do this interview, I’m shaking so bad,” said Martin after his qualifying lap to Speed reporters. “That car was bad fast.”

The last time that Martin held on a pole was at Richmond earlier this year.

Even though he had the fastest lap, Martin said that he wasn’t able to hold the car as wide open as he wanted.

“I couldn’t get [the car] wide open, but it was fast enough,” Martin said. “All the credit goes to those who work on the car.”

This is only the tenth race of the season for the 53 year old Martin, but it is the third time he has started from the pole for a race this season, so far leading all drivers.

Rounding out the top five in qualifying is Ryan Newman in third, Clint Bowyer in fourth and last year’s race winner, Matt Kenseth, in fifth.

The fastest qualifying Dodge was Brad Keselowski in 16th.

Failing to qualify for the show were Josh Wise and Cole Whitt.
