Tony Stewart won the pole for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, topping qualifying with a lap of 191.950 mph to earn his first pole of the season and first career pole at Charlotte in 26 races.

“That’s a (Ryan) Newman lap right there. I don’t know we will see if it holds up. Pretty proud of Darian (Grubb, Crew Chief), and everyone on the Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet tonight. We have been pretty solid since we unloaded so it’s a perfect way to start the weekend so far.”

Following Stewart in Thursday’s qualifying session was an onslaught of Ford’s, led by Roush Fenway Racing’s chase drivers Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards. A.J. Allmendinger and Greg Biffle qualified fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson and Trevor Bayne rounded out the top 10.

Toyota’s late season woes continued during qualifying at Charlotte, landing only one car in the top 10, thanks to Kasey Kahne. Kahne was fastest in practice and ended up being the fastest qualifying Toyota in eighth. Joey Logano qualified 16th, Denny Hamlin in 17th with Kyle Busch in 25th to round out a very unhappy Joe Gibbs Racing stable.
