Pocono Raceway: Jeff Gordon Shifts His Way to Second Victory in 2011

June 12, 2011 No Comments

Jeff Gordon earned his 84th career victory on Sunday, tying him for third all-time with Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip. Gordon led 39 laps on Sunday to win the 5-Hour Energy 500 at Pocono Raceway, tying him with Bill Elliott for the most wins (five) at the 2.5 mile “Tricky Triangle.”

The victory is the second for Gordon in 2011, with his last coming at Phoenix International Raceway in February. This is the first mulit-win season for Gordon since 2007, where he won six races and finished second in the Chase, just behind his teammate Jimmie Johnson.

Gordon is currently the only driver outside of the top 10 with two victories, and the only driver in wildcard contention (11-20th) to see victory lane. Brad Keselowski (22nd) and Regan Smith (27th) are the only other drivers outside of the top 10 with a victory in 2011.

Gordon was asked in post-race interviews if he feels that he is locked into the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“No, there is too much racing left to go. You have guys like (Denny) Hamlin who are really strong and a bunch of other ones that can ease up,” Gordon said. “There are guys that can win multiple races. I feel a lot better about it though. That is for darn sure.”

Pole-sitter Kurt Busch was able to turn in his best finish in a 2011 points race, finishing second. Kyle Busch finished in third but failed post-race inspections due to a height issue with the left-front. Jimmie Johnson finished in fourth with Kevin Harvick in fifth.
